Mobility Ramp Installation Grant

John (63) lives with his wife Lesley (61) in Sanquhar in Dumfries and Galloway. He worked for RMG as a postman for 7 years at Sanquhar DO.  Lesley has a part time job however she is leaving this to become John’s full-time carer.

John is diagnosed with Psoriatic Spondyloarthropathy, an inflammatory rheumatic disease that affects major joints of the body, as well as the fingers and toes, along with the back and pelvis and his condition also affects his spine, shoulders, knees and his hands –  has meant his is unable to work.  He has had 15 operations in the last 20 years and is wheelchair bound.

John was previously part of the GB Archery Squad for 18 years, becoming World Champion in 1999 in New Zealand.  During his time as a postman, Royal Mail sponsored the Paralympic Games in Atlanta 1996 and John represented his country – he was a Postman and Paralympian at the same time.  John was part of the Squad until the London 2012 Games but, unfortunately, due to the illness affecting his hands he was no longer able to compete

John applied to the Fund for a grant of £2,500 towards the cost of fitting a mobility ramp on the exterior of his house and we were delighted to be able to help.
